Message from the director
This story is along the same lines as other Japanese folk tales such as “Warashibe Choja” (The Straw Millionaire) or “Sannen Netaro” (The 3-year Sleeping Boy).
“The Overnight Samurai” itself has different versions according to the place and period of origin. For example the bride trying to poison the man could instead challenge him to a test of bravery and marry him when he succeeds, or the giant snake could become a bandit or a demon from Devil’s Island.
